Obituary: Joseph William ‘Bill’ Smith, 79, Springfield
Joseph William “Bill” Smith, 79, of Cissellville Road, Springfield, died at 11:35 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at University Hospital. He was a native of Washington County, born Dec. 10, 1938, to the late John Ed and Mary Alice Johnson Smith. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church. He was a farmer and a retired employee of Lily Tulip/Owen-Illinois.
He was preceded in death by a son, Billy Joe Smith; a daughter-in-law, Gail Marie Smith; two brothers, Lenny Smith and Tommy Smith; one sister-in-law, Nina Jean Smith; infant twin great granddaughters Alissa Smith and Alyiah Smith; and a nephew, Paul F. Smith Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Hamilton Smith; two daughters, Mary Ellen Smith of Louisville and Imelda Gilpin (Charles) of Danville; one son, Larry Smith (Rose) of Springfield; four sisters, Theresa Osbourn and Betty Blandford (Jerry), both of Springfield, Mary Fendley (Jim) of LaGrange and Irene Cheser of Lexington; six brothers, Tony Smith (Anna Catherine), Paul Smith, J.C. Smith (Ruth Ellen) and Kenny Smith (Delores), all of Springfield, John Smith (Joyce) of Louisville and Joe Smith (Nancy) of Alexander; five grandchildren, Lee Smith, Jeremy Smith, Bradley Smith, Emily Smith and Katie Gilpin; and six great-grandchildren, Devon Smith, Lauren Smith, Cayden Smith, Elliot Smith, Garrett Smith and Olivia Smith.
The Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2018, at St. Rose Catholic Church with the Rev. Edmund Ditton officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Emily Smith, Devon Smith and Katie Gilpin. Serving as pallbearers will be Jeremy Smith, Bradley Smith, Lee Smith, Jesse Smith, Mike Cambron and Nick Cambron.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018, at Carey & Son Funeral Home in Springfield with a 6 p.m. prayer service Sunday.
