Obituary: John “Jack” Royce Beam Sr., 90, Bardstown

John “Jack” Royce Beam Sr., 90, of Bardstown, died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 18, 2018, at Windsor Gardens. He was born Jan. 12, 1928, in New Haven to the late Guy S. and Mary Burch Beam. He was retired from Barton’s Distillery as a shipping supervisor. He was a member of St. Joseph Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a walking book of knowledge when it came to the bourbon industry, he volunteered at the Oscar Getz Museum, loved to talk and never met a stranger. He also was an avid golfer and card player. He was a fan of the Cincinnati Reds, University of Kentucky, Notre Dame and a member of the Quarterback Club. But being with his family was the most important to him, especially the love of his life, Mary Hortense, whom he had been married to for 69 years. They loved to travel together.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters, and one granddaughter, Laura Lemieux.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Hortense Sims Beam; four daughters, Betty Carol Riley and Katie (Richard) Patterson, both of Bardstown, Jean (Larry) Acton of Franklin, Tenn., and Jackie (Vincent) Lemieux of Lexington; two sons, John (Karin) Beam Jr. of Lexington and Joe Gary Beam of Bardstown; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2018, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral with the Rev. Joseph C. Batcheldor officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018, and 8:30-10:30 a.m. Monday at the Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home, 1475 New Shepherdsville Road.

Contributions may be made in the form of donations to St. Joseph Church, Hospice of Nelson County or Lexington Dream Factory.

The Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
