Tuesday’s filing deadline creates a first for county — 3 local GOP primary races

Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2018 —Nelson County Clerk Elaine Filiatreau’s office was busy on the filing deadline Tuesday as seven candidates — including six Republicans and one Democrat — submitted their paperwork to run as candidates for office.

Tuesday’s filings included:

Republican Marion Kelly Pulliam, who filed as a candidate for county clerk;

Republican Chris Middletown, who filed as a candidate for sheriff;

Republican James F. Beery, who filed as a candidate for jailer;

Republicans Selvey Vittitow and Philip H. Bischoff Jr, ,both of whom who filed as candidates seeking the office of magistrate, District 3;

Democrat David Call, who filed seeking the office of District 3 magistrate;

Republican Trey Bradley, who filed as a candidate seeking the office of District 5 magistrate.

REPUBLICAN PRIMARIES. With the filing deadline passed, Nelson County Republican voters will have a rare event in May — three local Republican primary races in which to cast ballots.

In the sheriff’s race, Republicans Todd Harper and Chris Middletown will square off in the May primary. In the race for Third District magistrate, Republicans will decide between Selvey Vittitow and Philip H. Bischoff Jr. to represent the party in the November general election. And Republican primary voters in the county’s 5th District will decide between David M. Williams II and Trey Bradley.

UNCONTESTED RACES. Six local elected positions face no opposing candidate in either the primary or general election.

These elected positions include:

Commonwealth’s Attorney Terry Geoghegan
Property Valuation Administrator Barbara Tichenor
Magistrate District 1 Keith Metcalfe.
Magistrate District 4 Jeffrey G. Lear.

COUNTY CLERK. Gail Brown (D); Jeanette Hall Sidebottom (D); Marion Kelly Pulliam (R).

SHERIFF. Ramon Pineiroa (D); Kaelen Matthews (D); Kenny Downs (D); Todd Harper (R); Chris Middleton (R).

JAILER. Dorcas Figg (D); Michael P. Johnson (D); John “Buck” Snellen (D); James F. Beery (R).

CORONER. Rayfield “Field” Houghlin (D); Douglas S. Alexander (R).

MAGISTRATE D2. Sam Hutchins (D); Gary Coulter (D).

MAGISTRATE D3. Bernard Ice (D); David Call (D); Selvey W. Vittitoe (R); Philip H. Bischoff Jr. (R).

MAGISTRATE D5. Eric W. Shelburne (D); David M. Williams II (R); Trey Bradley (R).

The May Primary election is Tuesday, May 22, 2018.
