Obituary: Joe Snellen Satterly, ‘The Candy Man,’ 78, Bardstown

Joe Snellen Satterly, a.k.a. “The Candy Man,” 78, of Bardstown, died Monday, March 12, 2018, at his residence. He was born May 28, 1939, in Louisville. He retired as a welder for Caldwell Tanks and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Cathy Satterly; his parents, Manuel and Lillie Satterly Snellen; and one brother, Willard Snellen.

He is survived by two daughters, Denise Annette Valasquez of Elizabethtown and Mary Joe Broaddus of Bardstown; two sons, Joseph Satterly Jr. and Kevin Ross Satterly, both of Bardstown; six sisters, Martha Reed and Bernice (Luther) Simms, both of Samuels, Jean Valley and Thelma (Irvin) Masterson, both of Bardstown, Carolyn Schamacher of Louisville and Darlene (Marland) Holt of Harrodsburg; four brothers, Billy (Joyce) Snellen, John Buck Snellen, Timmy (Terri) Snellen, and Richard Snellen, all of Bardstown; 12 grandchildren, Kristian Richardson, Malari Richardson, Cole Sanders, Garrett Sanders, Jesica Coaty, Sarah Broaddus, Madison Perham, Hunter Broaddus, Danielle Riley, Lesley Satterly, Jake Satterly, and Dale Satterly; nine great-grandchildren, Blaire Evans, Liam Alexander, Amelia Sanders, Claire Sanders, Luke Baumgard, Caleb Baumgard, Brooklyn Baumgard, Catherine Coaty, Silais Wurzback; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral is 11 a.m. Thursday, March 15, 2018, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral with burial in the church cemetery with the Rev. Terry Bradshaw officiating.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2018, and 9-11 a.m. Thursday, March 15, 2018, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral.

Memorial contributions may go to St. Joseph Catholic Church.

The Barlow Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
