One person dead after crash sends vehicle into KY 245 rock quarry

Friday, June 10, 2011, 6:30 p.m. — A Springfield woman died Friday evening and her son was injured after the vehicle they were in was involved in a crash that sent it into the Cedar Creek rock quarry on KY 245.

Florence R. McRay, 91, of Springfield, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was riding with her son, Ronnie McRay, 58, of Lebanon. McRay was trapped in his vehicle, which landed on its roof in the quarry. He was flown by medical helicopter to University of Louisville Hospital complaining of head injuries as well as possible hip/pelvis injuries.

McRay’s vehicle was reportedly driving erratically as it approached the quarry. It hit a guardrail, hit a car in front of it before eventually driving off the south side of KY 245 into the quarry near its entrance. His car overturned and came to rest on its hood and roof.

The Bardstown Fire Department was called to extricate the injured man from the vehicle. Nelson County EMS responded to the accident scene as did the county coroner. Traffic on KY245 was shut down so the air ambulance could land on the roadway.

The accident happened about 6:15 Friday evening.
