County schools dismissing early Friday so staff can attend Frankfort protests

STAFF REPORT

Wednesday, April 11, 2018 — The Nelson County Schools will dismiss classes 2-1/2 hours early this Friday in order that the district’s teachers and staff can attend protests at the Capitol in Frankfort.

Teachers across Kentucky have been called to Frankfort this Friday for what the state teacher’s union is calling “a day of action at the Capitol.”

In his One Call phone message to parents that was broadcast at about 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nelson County Schools Interim Superintendent Tom Brown explained that all of the district’s schools will dismiss early this Friday, April 13.

The exact dismissal time at each school will be posted on the school’s webpage, as well as the district’s webpage, Brown explained.

Early dismissal on Friday was necessary because “of the large numbers of teachers and staff wanting to go to Frankfort on Friday,” he said.

The early dismissal allows the district to have school and still give teachers the opportunity to attend the protests in Frankfort.

“We think this situation is in the best interest of all of us, but more important, its in the best interests of the students,” Brown said.

Afternoon preschool on Friday is canceled, and morning preschool will dismiss at 11 a.m. The district’s childcare services will be open as usual.
