The elementary school’s site-based council received principal selection training in March 2018 from a certified and approved training from Kentucky Department of Education. The council held several meetings to determine criteria, collect information from stakeholders, and develop interview questions. They went through a lengthy interview process with four of the 12 individuals who applied for the position.

Based on the criteria established by the council, with input from stakeholders and following the recommended guidelines, the council feels that they have selected the best person to serve as principal of Bardstown Elementary School.

Courtney began his teaching career in 2005 as an Exceptional Education Resource Math Teacher at North Bullitt High School, a position he held until he became the school’s assistant principal in 2013. During the 2015-2016 school year he served as an assistant principal at Nelson County High School prior to accepting his current position in Jefferson County Public Schools.

Courtney holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management/Marketing from Indiana University Southeast and a Master of Arts in Exceptional Education from Western Kentucky University. He earned his Rank 1 in Educational Leadership from the University of the Cumberlands.

He and his wife Amber have four children and reside in Cox’s Creek.
