Saturday, June 11, 2011, 12:40 p.m. — Buzick Lumber and Home Center’s slogan “Building on Service” took on new meaning Saturday morning as a crew of the company’s employees headed to the Nelson County Fairgrounds for a service project — rebuilding the faigrounds’ original concession stand.
Seven employees — joined by 1st District magistrate Keith Metcalfe — arrived at the fairgrounds at 7 a.m. Saturday to complete a makeover of the building.
“We were hoping to beat the heat by getting an early start,” Susan Elmore said. She and son Jeff were putting a new coat of paint on the sides of the builidng.
According to Metcalfe, the fair board didn’t use the building last year, but with the makeover, they’ve told him they’ll certainly make good use of it this year.
As the morning sun rose in the clear, blue Saturday sky, Buzick workers stayed busy measuring and trimming vinyl pieces for the building’s new soffit as well as adding new trim and reworking the window openings.

“We built this for the fair board 20 or more years ago,” Buzick president Susan Elmore said. “We felt it would be a good service project to fix it back up,” she said while rolling on a coat of light tan paint. “I don’t know if we’ll knock it all out today, but we’re trying to get as much done as we can.”
Metcalfe was pitching in too, helping out with a trim brush, spreading paint into the hard-to-reach nooks and crannies. “They’re a great group of people who decided to do basically overhaul this building so it will look nice for this year’s county fair,” he said. “I have to give the a lot of credit for taking their Saturday to donate their time, skill and materials.”
The volunteers included the Elmores, Michael Jackson, Eddie Masterson, Kenny Boone, Neal Thornsberry, Danny Guthrie and Chris Boone.
