Obituary: Vernice Eugene ‘Gene’ Logue, 79, Elizabethtown

Vernice Eugene “Gene” Logue, 79, of Elizabethtown, died Wednesday, July 4, 2018, surrounded by family after a battle with prostate cancer. He was born June 13, 1939, in Mercer County.

He was baptized at age 12 at Deep Creek Baptist Church in Harrodsburg. Later he joined the U.S. Navy and served for 10 years that included two tours in Vietnam as a Logistical Ship Engineer. Then he transferred to the Army for a total of 20 years of honorable service. He retired at Fort Knox as a Chief Warrant Officer (CW-3).

After retirement, he worked for the State of Kentucky as Logistics and Maintenance Grounds Supervisor at Fort Knox and then was selected as the Area 5 Coordinator for Disaster and Emergency Management. In total, he served his country and the people of the State of Kentucky for 52 years.

He had a thirst for knowledge and went to school at night to complete both his high school degree and his bachelor’s degree in Industrial Education. One of his favorite hobbies was small engine repair. He and his wife enjoyed old-time country and gospel music shows and he was an avid Elvis fan. He loved to travel when possible and enjoyed running marathons. His favorite race was the Marine Corp Marathon in Washington D.C., where he enjoyed running past the historic monuments and finishing the 26.2 miles by “taking the last hill” at the Iwo Jima Memorial. In his last years, he sacrificed much of his own health while caring for his wife. He loved her dearly and often said he wouldn’t have done it any other way. When he was asked what he would most want to be remembered for, he said it would be his love of God, love of family and love of country.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil Jewell Logue and Opal Taylor Logue; his stepmother, Myrtle Logue; and his beloved wife of almost 56 years, Duplee Logue.

He is survived by four children, Norma Hatfield (Todd), Teresa Edlin (Todd), Marlene Knight (Billy), and Arlene Champ; nine grandchildren, Michael Hatfield, Christina Heppermann (Brett), Megan Edlin, Jessica Champ, Tyler Edlin, Brittany Smith (Travis), Katie Knight, Jacob Knight and Matthew Champ; a brother Jewell Taylor (JT) Logue (Elaine); and seven great-grandchildren.
