Monday, July 16, 2018 — Bardstown City Councilman Bill Sheckles, 3/5/54, filed his candidacy paperwork this morning to run for another two-year term on the council.

BILL SHECKLES

Sheckles, 64, served multiple terms as a councilman prior to his election as the city’s mayor in 2010. He served one term as mayor, then was re-elected to the council in 2016.

All six city council seats and the office of mayor will be on the Nov. 6, 2018 General Election ballot. They are non-partisan races.

According to the Kentucky State Board of Elections, candidates for city council must be 18 years of age, a resident of the city for not less than 1 year prior to his or her election, a qualified voter in the city, and plan to live in the city during their term of office.

City council members are elected to two-year terms of office. The office of mayor is a four-year term.

Of the six current members of the Bardstown City Council, only one has made it clear he does not plan to see re-election. Councilman John Kelly Jr. has publicly stated he will not seek another term on the council.

The filing deadline for the non-partisan races on the November ballot is 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14.

CANDIDATE WITHDRAWS. Following up on his statements on social media, New Hope resident David R. Reed filed his paperwork withdrawing as an independent candidate for District 1 magistrate.

DAVID REED

In a social media post earlier this month, Reed explained that a family member’s health issues made it “apparent to me that I will not have the time, energy, nor finances to continue with my campaign to become magistrate of District 1.”

“It is with regret that I announce that I will be withdrawing my name from the ballot. I will be contacting the county clerks office at my first opportunity to do so and filling the proper paperwork. I would like to thank all of you who urged me to run, and those who have supported me during this campaign,” he wrote in his post.

Reed filed as an independent candidate in March. Magistrates serve a four-year term on Nelson Fiscal Court.

The 1st District covers the southernmost portions of Nelson County.
