Obituary: Earl ‘Don’ Smith, 81, Bardstown

EARL “DON” SMITH

Earl “Don” Smith, 81, of Bardstown, died Monday, July 16, 2018, at his residence. He was born Dec. 8, 1936, in Amelia, Ohio. He was a retired salesman for Hydrotech, Inc. He was a 1954 graduate of Batavia High School in Ohio, and a 1956 graduate of Ohio Mechanic Institute with a degree in electrical engineering. He married Patricia J. Smith on March 8, 1957. In 1957, he joined U.S. Army National Guard and served 20 years and retired as a Major. He was past president of the Bardstown Optimist Club, past president of Old Kentucky Home Country Club, and member and Elder Emeritus of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Morton Smith and Mary Turner Smith; one sister, Erla Mae Lail; and one brother, William E. Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Pat Smith of Bardstown; three children, Jeffrey (Diane) Smith of Crestwood, Jeremy (Jamie) Smith of Bardstown, and Vanessa (Jason) Ballard of Celina, Texas; one sister, Ethel May Booso of Mt. Orab, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Dr. Ryan (Dr. Molly) Smith, Aaron Smith, Emily L. Smith, Nolan Smith, Madelyn Smith, Evan Ballard, and Carson Ballard; one great-grandson, Franklin Oliver Smith; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral is 11 a.m. Friday, July 20, 2018, at the First Christian Church (D.O.C.), with burial in Bardstown Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Summers and Rev. Eldon Morgan officiating.

Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2018, at Barlow Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may go to First Christian Church (D.O.C.) Mortgage Balance or the Humane Society of Nelson County.
