Obituary: Mary Joan Greenwell Ayers, 82, New Haven

Mary Joan Greenwell Ayers, 82, of New Haven, went to be with her heavenly Father on Friday, Oct. 5, 2018, at her daughter’s home in Bloomfield. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She was born Nov. 5, 1935, in St. Francis to the late James Raymond and Annabelle Mattingly Greenwell. She was retired as cook for the Nelson County Jail.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Bernard “Goo Goo” Ayers; her parents, James Raymond and Annabelle Mattingly Greenwell; three sisters, Elizabeth Jane Cole, Virginia Ann Hatfield, and Stella Louise Miles; seven brothers, James William “Billy” Greenwell, Joseph Daniel Greenwell, James Raymond Greenwell Jr., James Frederick Greenwell, Charles Franklin Greenwell, Frances Edward Greenwell, and Thomas Steven Greenwell; one granddaughter, Crystal Holt; and one grandson, Charlie Ayers.

She is survived by four daughters, Rita Carol (Gerald) Lucas of New Haven, Patricia Gayle (Bill) Reuss of Bardstown, Laura Lynn (Kevin) Rogers of New Haven and Victoria Joan (John) Bunch of Bloomfield; four sons, Bernard Wayne (Debra) Ayers, Donald Raymond (Ginger) Ayers, Jeffery Scott Ayers and Christopher Todd (Missy) Ayers, all of New Haven; seven sisters, Martha Susan Absher, Laura Edna Kesten, Marie Pauline Greenwell, Rosa Belle Sweeney, and Dorothy June Boyles, all of Louisville, Jettie Caroline Piszczek of California, and Nancy Jean Lane of Pennsylvania; one brother, Phillip Allen Greenwell of Mount Washington; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The funeral is 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8, 2018, at St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church in New Haven with the Rev. Matthew Hardesty officiating, Burial is in the church cemetery.

Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018, at the William R. Rust Funeral Home New Haven Chapel and 8:30-10 a.m. Monday at the church. A prayer service is 5 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Matthew Hardesty officiating.

The William R. Rust Funeral Home New Haven Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
