Obituary: Helen Bennett Downs, 87, Bardstown
Helen Bennett Downs, 87, of Bardstown, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, at Loretto Motherhouse. She was born Sept. 7, 1931, in Louisville. She was raised in Taylorsville and graduated from Nazareth College in Louisville. She was a retired nurse from Family Medical Center, and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Pat Downs; one son, Stephen Hilary Downs; three sisters, Anna Ray Hurst, Kass Winkler, and Joanne McCloskey; and five brothers, Edward Bennett, Warren Bennett, Jack Bennett, Billy Bennett, and Pat Bennett.
She is survived by seven children, J. Michael Downs, David (Karen) Downs, Harriett Ballard, Angela (Michael) Ballard, Joseph F. Downs II, Teresa Downs Newton, and Bill (Linda) McCloskey; one daughter-in-law, Elaine Downs; three sisters, Jeanne Theobald, Carol Bennett, and Bettye Tharp; one brother, Bobby Bennett; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Mass is 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral with the Rev. Terry Bradshaw officiating. Burial is in Bardstown Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019, and 9-10:15 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019, at Barlow Funeral Home with a prayer service Wednesday evening.
Memorial contributions may go to Loretto Mother House or St. Joseph Catholic Church.
