Obituary: Sylvia Mae Hutchins, 95, Bardstown

SYLVIA MAE HUTCHINS

Sylvia Mae Hutchins, 95, of Bardstown, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019, at Baptist Health Hospital. She was born May 2, 1923, in McKinney to the late Oscar Lee and Stella Simpson Coffman. She was retired from BellSouth, a homemaker and a farmer who worked hard along side of her late husband on the farm from putting up fence posts, barn roofs, planting crops and gardens. Family was important to her, so much she moved her younger sister in with her and helped her through school. She was a member of New Salem Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Paul “Red” Hutchins; one sister, Bernadine “Bunny” Poer; one brother, Edward Earl Coffman; two sisters-in-law, LaVerne Wurster and Inez Buchter; and one nephew-in-law, Fred Davis.

She is survived by eight nieces, Teresa “Teri” (Michael) Walters and Marsha (Marcus) Moore, both of Winchester, Deborah “Debbie” Davis of Barbourville, Norma Ann Gooch of Russell, Kansas, Sharon Kercher and Barbara (John) Linnig, both of Louisville, Connie (Doug) Focht of Port Clinton, Ohio, and Mary Jane (Charlie) Cek of Hudson, Ohio; three nephews Daryl (Kris) Wurster of Greenville, S.C., Bruce (Susan) Hendricks of Hudson, Ohio., and Wayne (Nan) Young of Danville; two sisters-in-law, Edna Coffman of Danville and Doris Hutchins Rountree of Hudson, Ohio; one brother-in-law, Marvin “Buddy” Poer of Winchester; three cousins, Ruby Marlow, Lillie McMullins and Roberta Estes of Beech Grove, Ind., and her children who helped her — Valerie Trees, Debbie Eldridge, Ileta Schaub, Twylia White, Burl Estes and Judy Shaw.

The funeral is 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2019, at the Houghlin Greenwell Funeral Home with Pastor Jonathan Gann officiating. Burial is in the Bardstown Cemetery.

Visitation is 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

The family requests memorial contributions go to New Salem Baptist Church in her memory.

The Houghlin Greenwell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
