Poplar Flat Cemetery observance is 2 p.m. Sunday, May 26th

Wednesday, May 15, 2019 — The Poplar Flat Cemetery at Woodlawn, near Bardstown, will hold its annual Memorial Day Service at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 26, 2019, at the cemetery, located at the end of Poplar Flat Cemetery Road (weather permitting, otherwise at Woodlawn/Beech Fork United Methodist Church, 4110 Woodlawn Road, Bardstown).

Poplar Flat Cemetery is one of the oldest in Nelson County. Joseph Ferguson, founder of what is now known as the Woodlawn/Beech Fork United Methodist Church, moved to Nelson County from Virginia in 1784 and made his home in “Popular Flat”.

The first meeting house, known as Ferguson’s Chapel, was erected at what is now the site of the Poplar Flat Cemetery, in 1792. Ferguson died Nov. 28, 1828, and is buried in the Poplar Flat Cemetery. The cemetery also contains graves of several other early pioneers, and at least two Revolutionary War patriots, Philip Daniel Crume and Captain Thomas Lewis.

Donations for the upkeep of the cemetery are appreciated and should be sent to Poplar Flat Cemetery Fund, c/o 1006 Windrift Court, Bardstown, KY 40004.

Members of the Cemetery Committee extend an invitation for everyone to attend the service on May 26.

Fairfield Cemetery to to host Memorial Day service 1:30 Sunday, May 26th

Wednesday, May 15, 2019 — There will be a Memorial Day service at the Fairfield Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon, May 26, 2019. The cemetery is located between Fairfield and Bloomfield off of Fairfield Cemetery Loop. All are invited.

Bardstown Memorial Day set for 11 a.m. Monday, May 27th at city cemetery gazebo

Tuesday, May 14, 2019 — The Memorial Day commemoration for Bardstown is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, May 27, 2019, at the gazebo in the Bardstown Cemetery.

This year’s event will be dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the local National Guard units deployment to Vietnam and subsequent battle killing several of the members of the unit.

Bardstown Mayor Dick Heaton will welcome those present and a keynote address on grief and remembrance will be delivered by Karl Lusk, chaplain for the local emergency services in Nelson County, as well as serving in that role at Flaget Hospital. He is the pastor of the Episcopal Church in Bardstown. Doug Foster, Director of Honor Flight Bluegrass, will also be on hand to mention the Honor Flight associated with this 50th year anniversary.

The Flag Ceremony will be conducted by local Scouts in Nelson County. Retired Air Force Chief Master Sergeant Kenny Fogle will again preside as Master of Ceremonies for the annual event. American Legion Posts from Bardstown will participate.

Mount Washington Cemetery’s annual Memorial Day Service is 2:30 p.m. on Sunday

Monday, May 20, 2019 — The Mount Washington Cemetery will host the annual Memorial Day Service on Sunday, May 26, 2019 at 2:30.  Everyone is invited to attend to honor our veterans and lost loved ones.
