Election 2019: Gov. Bevin to face Andy Beshear in November general election

Tuesday, May 21, 2019 — Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear was declared the winner of the Democratic gubernatorial primary Tuesday evening with 38.06 percent of the vote form 84 of 120 counties reporting.

As election returns were being counted after the polls closed, Rocky Adkins initially took the lead in the four-way primary race for governor, with a wide swath of Eastern Kentucky counties voting for Adkins. Fayette and Jefferson county returns helped put Beshear ahead of Adkins.

Adkins finished second with just over 31 percent of the state vote, ahead of former state auditor Adam Edelen, who received 28.7 percent of the votes cast so far.

NELSON COUNTY VOTES. Voter turnout in Nelson County was low — 18.9 percent. According to the Secretary of State’s office, 6,443 voters out of 34,076 registered voters went to the polls Tuesday.

LOCAL REPUBLICAN PRIMARY

Gov. Matt Bevin led the pack from the first returns, ahead of his Republican challengers. In Nelson County, Bevin received nearly 62 percent of the vote, with Robert Goforth the second-highest vote getter with 27.51 percent.

SECRETARY. OF STATE. Michael Adams won the four-way race for the GOP nomination for secretary of state in Nelson County by 113 votes over Carl “Trump” Net and 117 votes over Andrew English. Stephen Knipper receved 18 percent of the vote. Adams ended up winning the primary statewide as well.

ATTORNEY GENERAL. Daniel Cameron won Nelson County over Wil Schroder, 56.76 percent to 43.24 percent of the vote. Cameron had ties to and the support and encouragement of Sen. Mitch McConnell. Cameron won the statewide primary for the office.

AG COMMISSIONER. Incumbent Republican Ag Commissioner Ryan Quarles won in a landslide over his opponent, Bill Polyniak, in Nelson County, with 82 percent of the vote to Polyniak’s 17.9 percent.

LOCAL DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY

GOVERNOR. Andy Beshear outpolled Adam Edelen by 197 votes to win Nelson County. Rocky Adkins received 25.66 percent of the vote,, with Geoffrey M. Young received 1.75 percent of the county vote.

SEC. OF STATE. Former Miss America Heather French Henry overwhelmed her fellow Democratic opponents to win big in the secretary of state’s race in Nelson County with just over 81 percent of the county vote. Her opponents, Jason Griffith, Geoff Sebesta and Jason Belcher received less than 9 percent of the vote each.

AUDITOR OF PUBLIC ACCOUNTS. Sheri Donahue won the county vote for auditor with 54.75 percent of the vote. Jefferson County school teacher Kelsey Hayes Coots received 26.69 percent and “Kentucky Fried Pension” author Chris Tobe received 18.56 percent

AG COMMISH. Robert Haley Conway won the local vote for the Democratic nomination for Commissioner of Agriculture over Joe Trigg with 52.41 percent of the vote.

According to Al Cross’s comments on KET election coverage, Conway is on the record as a supporter of recreation marijuana.

TREASURER. Michael Bowman won Nelson County in landslide over Josh Mers with 69.23 percent of the vote.
