Obituary: Shirley Nugent, SCN, 87, (formerly Sister Daniel Maria) of Louisville

Shirley Nugent, SCN, 87, (formerly Sister Daniel Maria), of Louisville, died Thursday, July 11, 2019. She was born in Brighton, Mass., and was a professed Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 66 years.

Her first ministries were in education, as a grade-school teacher and principal at St. Matthias in Louisville; St. John in Bellaire, Ohio; St. Vincent de Paul in Mt. Vernon, OH; St. William in Millington, Tenn., and Little Flower in Memphis, Tenn. She was elected Provincial in 1974. She served the SCN Community in this capacity until 1980.

In 1982, she began her healthcare ministry. She served as director of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) for St. Elizabeth Hospital in Brighton, Mass. She was also the CPE director for the Franciscan Sisters of Philadelphia Healthcare System and Catholic Health Initiatives. She later served as a spiritual director in Massachusetts.

She is survived by her extended family and by her religious community.

Visitation and a prayer service is 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 12, 2019, at Nazareth Home Chapel in Louisville. The wake is 6:30 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2019, at St. Vincent de Paul Church at Nazareth.

The Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 15, 2019 at St. Vincent de Paul Church at Nazareth with burial in Nazareth Cemetery.
