Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2019 — The Bardstown Board of Education approved today the initial documents that start the process of building a new elementary school.
The new school will hold up to 850 students from Grades 2 through 5. The $21.19 million project will be built on the 71-acre Templin Avenue tract the school system purchased from Salt River Electric in 2015.
“This should relieve us of overcrowding for some time to come,” Todd Hood, director of pupil personnel, told the board.

Construction will begin after first of the year, and will host its first students by August 2021.
The board also agreed to advertise a request for proposals for a construction manager for the project. The plan is to accept applications and then narrow down the list to a final group to be evaluated.
FOOTBALL FIELD TURF PROJECT. The board agreed to use Lexington-based Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects for the construction of the new turf at the football field. The goal is to have the new artificial turf installed by next Spring.
Work on the field could begin as early as November.

CENSUS 2020 PROJECT. The board listened to a presentation about how high school students will be helping with the 2020 Census.
According to the students, the most under-counted population in the census are children under the age of 9.
High school students are invited to take part in a logo/slogan contest, which will personalize the Census for the immediate Nelson County area. According to Superintendent Ryan Clark, the City of Bardstown will use the winning logo and slogan on its materials to promote the census.
Students in lower grades will be invited to take part in art contests about the census.
In other business, the board of education:
- approved the 2019-2020 working budget. Treasurer Tracey Rogers told the board that 77 percent of the district’s overall $37.7 million budget was allocated to employee wages and benefits.
- watched a presentation on best practices for data security by Network Administrator Roman Hardin.
- gave final approval of the district’s certified job descriptions.
NEXT UP. The Bardstown Board of Education’s next meeting is noon Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2019.
