Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2019 — Nelson Fiscal Court discussed and approved first reading on updates to the county’s personnel ordinance at its meeting this morning.

Judge Executive Dean Watts explained that the changes were designed to keep the county’s employment policies current and competitive.

One of the changes is to allow employee’s to begin accruing vacation time after 90 days of employment, rather than waiting a full year.

“No matter who we’re trying to recruit, if they’re going to have to give up vacation time to come to work for us, that’s not helpful,” Watts said.

Magistrate Eric Shelburne

APPOINTMENT. Fiscal Court approved the appointment of Jim Nelson as a representative from District 3 on the Nelson County Planning Commission.

Nelson has previously served on the Nelson County Air Board, and resigned in order to accept the planning commission appointment.

In other business, fiscal court:

  • approved the purchase of a new Snow Dogg brand snow plow from Madisonville-based IMPCO for $8,264.52. A new plow was needed because none of the county’s existing plows will work with the new truck the county is purchasing.
  • discussed changes to the county boom mower crew that means they crews are working overtime in order to cover as much of each magisterial district as possible before winter.
  • declared two grade-alls as surplus property that will be disposed of in a future, mostly like by the auction method.

NEXT UP. Nelson Fiscal Court next meets at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. Oct. 1, 2019, in the fiscal court meeting room on the second floor of the Old Courthouse.
