Nelson Co. deputy sheriff arrested Friday on shoplifting charge in Hardin County

Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019 — A Nelson County deputy sheriff was arrested Friday, Sept. 27, 2019, on theft-related charges in Hardin County.

Kaelen P. Matthews, 39, of Bardstown, was booked into the Hardin County Detention Center on Friday on a single charge of theft by unlawful taking or disposition – shoplifting under $500.

According to Hardin County Detention Center records, Matthews was taken into custody by the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office. He was no longer listed in the custody of the Hardin County jail Saturday morning. When he was arrested, his bond was set at $500 cash.

Matthews holds the rank of lieutenant in the Nelson County sheriff’s office and is listed on the sheriff’s office website as a member of Sheriff Ramon Pineiroa’s leadership team.

Matthews was a Democratic candidate in the three-way May 2018 primary for Nelson County Sheriff, losing to Pineiroa by 587 votes.

The sheriff’s office plans to release a statement later today.
