Obituary: Thomas ‘Nelson’ Ball, 90, Bardstown

Thomas “Nelson” Ball, 90, of Bardstown, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2019, at his residence. He was born July 13, 1929, in Loretto to the late James Arthur “JA” and Mary Christine Nelson Ball. He was the President of the former Ball Brothers Oil Company. He was a U.S. Army veteran during the Korean War. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Mudd Ball; and three brothers, James Donald Ball, William Garland Ball and David Louis Ball.

He is survived by three brothers, James Arthur “JA” (Frances) Ball Jr., of Mechanicsburg, Penn., Joseph Bernard “Hinkie” Ball of Lebanon and Rudy (Betty Jane) Ball of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; and his caregivers, Missy Summitt and Susan Hutchins; and his beloved dog Boogie III.

The Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, 2019, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral with the Rev. Terry Bradshaw officiating. Burial is in the St. Thomas Cemetery.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2019, with evening prayers and additional visitation after 8:300 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, 2019, at the Houghlin Greenwell Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. Joseph for Masses or to the donor’s favorite charitable organization.

The Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
