Bardstown City Council to consider occupational tax changes tonight
STAFF REPORT
Tuesday, July 11, 2011, 9 a.m. — The Bardstown City Council will meet at 7 p.m. this evening in the council chambers in the City Hall Annex building behind Spalding Hall.
The council will consider second reading of its revised occupational tax ordinance that was approved in a 4-2 vote at its June 28th meeting. If approved, the measure would mean the city’s occupational tax would now apply to the first $15,000 of income earned within the city limits. The current occupational tax exempts the first $15,000 of income.
The tax is currently capped at $75,000 of income; the ordinance approved last month raises the cap to $100,000 — a move which drew sharp criticism from Mayor Bill Sheckles. Sheckles favored removing the cap entirely, telling the council that it was the fairest way to raise revenue for the city’s general fund.
The city is looking to substantially increase the amount of revenue it receives via the occupational tax. Please check back late tonight for complete coverage of the city council’s meeting.
