Obituary: Hower Thomas ‘Tommy’ Baker Jr., 88, Chaplin

Hower Thomas “Tommy” Baker Jr., 88, of Chaplin, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2023, at UofL Health-Jewish Hospital. He was born Oct. 13, 1934, in Shelbyville to the late Hower Thomas and Margaret Stout Baker Sr. He was a retired employee of General Electric, was a former employee of L&N Railroad, and was a partner in the former Regal Oil Company. He and his wife, Mary Evelyn also provided childcare for children in the area. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, was a member of Chaplin Christian Church where he served as a deacon. He was an avid UK fan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Evelyn Holt Baker; one daughter-in-law, Bobbie Baker; one sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Bill Pearson; and one nephew, Dana Pearson.

He is survived by two sons, Brent (Lisa) Baker of Taylorsville and Todd Baker of Bloomfield; three grandchildren, Josh (Crystal) Allen, Breisa (Colin) Varney, and Hannah (Austin) Garrett; two great-grandchildren; and one nephew, Scott Pearson.

The funeral is 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023, at the Houghlin Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Bro. Ernie Perry officiating. Burial is in Highview Cemetery.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2023, at the Houghlin Funeral Home in Bloomfield.

The Houghlin Funeral Home in Bloomfield is in charge of arrangements.
