Local scholarships available for students in Nelson County through Scholarship Central

Monday, Jan. 30, 2023 – Central Kentucky Community Foundation has up to $350,000 in scholarships for the 2023 academic year available through Scholarship Central.

Scholarship applications are now being accepted through Scholarship Central, CKCF’s easy-to-use online scholarship portal at ckcf4people.org. Using just one application, students have access to over 150 scholarships available to award. Students have from now until midnight EST, Wednesday, March 1 to apply.

Scholarship Central is user-friendly and allows students in CKCF’s nine-county region, that includes Breckinridge, Grayson, Hardin, Hart, LaRue, Marion, Meade, Nelson and Washington Counties, to complete one application to be eligible for multiple scholarships. Students input basic information once and then customize details needed for specific scholarships.

With so many scholarships available, CKCF has made Scholarship Central an essential part of any college-bound student’s toolkit, driving more students to apply every year. Scholarships are offered to area students and eligibility is based on certain criteria. The following scholarships are available exclusively to students in Nelson County.

Ann Ewing Memorial Scholarship. Ann grew up and spent her life learning and teaching in Nelson County. Being an advanced math teacher, she was devoted to her students and this scholarship awards to a Nelson County High School Senior and a Bethlehem High School Senior who completed advanced math courses.

Bardstown Rotary Club. Scholarships available to graduating seniors from Bardstown High School, Bethlehem High School, Nelson County High School or Thomas Nelson High School are:

  • Father Ben Brown Scholarship
  • Dr. Harry Spalding Memorial Scholarship
  • Dr. John Benney Memorial Scholarship
  • Ron Filkins Memorial Scholarship
  • Dick Harlan Memorial Scholarship
  • Jack Kelley Memorial Scholarship
  • Mechelle Foster Memorial Scholarship
  • Bob Murray Memorial Scholarship
  • Tom Duncan Reed Sr. Memorial Scholarship

Cindy Ethington Memorial Scholarship. Cindy taught English and drama for many years at Nelson County High School, where she was known for the plays she directed. This $1,000 scholarship, in her memory, will go to a Nelson County High School graduating senior who completed at least four years of advanced English and/or Drama courses.

J. Michael Salsman, PE Construction Scholarship. This $1,000 award is for a senior from a high school in Nelson County who plans pursue a career in a construction or engineering-related field.

Kathy Mattingly Kidwell Memorial Scholarship. Kathy was an active volunteer with the Nelson County Special Olympics and other local organizations. To honor her, $500 scholarships will be given to a Nelson County High School and a Thomas Nelson High School graduating senior.

Randy Pinkston Memorial Scholarship. Randy spent his lifetime helping youth in Nelson and Hardin counties as a teacher, coach, and friend. Continuing his memory and investment in students, this scholarship will be given to a Nelson County or Thomas Nelson High School graduating senior who plans to pursue a career in the special education field.

Taylor Martin Scholarship. Taylor was an active senior who played soccer at Thomas Nelson High School and was planning to attend Western Kentucky University but passed away in 2015. This scholarship is awarded to Thomas Nelson High School graduate who has a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher.

Tyler Foster Memorial Scholarship. Tyler was a senior at University of Kentucky majoring in accounting and finance and was also a member of the Kentucky Air National Guard when he passed away suddenly in 2015. In his memory, $1,000 scholarships will be given out to a Nelson County High School student and a Thomas Nelson High School student who show the commitment to learning, persistence, hard work and caring for others as Tyler demonstrated.

Scholarships available through Scholarship Central are generous gifts from numerous donors over many years. Scholarships vary in amount and eligibility criteria. Collectively, they represent a wide range of opportunities to reach students at many levels of academic achievement, community and school involvement, and financial situations. CKCF serves a large region, and some scholarships are specific for particular counties or schools. Information about available scholarships can be found at www.ckcf4people.org. CKCF is hosting a scholarship workshop on Monday, February 13th at 6-8pm at the Home of Philanthropy’s Community Hall. A representative from KHEAA to answer FAFSA questions and individualized help will be available for anyone who has questions about the Scholarship Central application.
