Obituary: Betty Jean Boone Ballard, 87, Bardstown

Betty Jean Boone Ballard, 87 of Bardstown, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2023, after a long life of service to God, family and many friends. She was a proud graduate and alumni of St. Catherine in New Haven and a great supporter of St. Joseph Church and Bethlehem High School. She enjoyed interacting with the public in jobs with the Nelson County Circuit Clerk and as bookkeeper for BGH Dean’s Milk Distributorship. Her hobbies included all family sporting events, concerts at the community park and keeping friends and family informed on local news. Affectionately known as Hamburger Helper, she never met a stranger nor forgot a single detail gleaned from a conversation.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Elmer “Hamburger” Ballard; her parents, Joseph Ramey Boone and Christina Bea Bryan Boone; two sisters, Mary Irene (Wally) Bowling and Anna Rose (Bill) Bowling; and two brothers, Joseph Adrian Boone and Joseph Leland (Shirley) Boone.

She is survived by four sons, John (Debbi) Ballard, Jim (Cindy) Ballard, Joseph B. Ballard and Jeff (Shawn) Ballard, all of Bardstown; one sister, Wanda (Charlie) Boone Downs; eight grandchildren, Tyler, Cole, Connor, Sara, Annie, Jack and Beatrice Ballard and Patrick Waskom; two great-grandchildren, Jillian and Luke; and many wonderful nieces, nephews and much loved extended family.

The Memorial Mass is 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 10, 2023, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral with burial in the church cemetery. with the Rev. Terry Bradshaw officiating.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023, and 9-10:15 a.m. Friday, Feb. 10, 2023, at Barlow Funeral Home with a 6 p.m. Thursday prayer service.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the St. Catherine’s School in New Haven, St. Joseph Church or Bethlehem High School.

Barlow Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
