Oldham County’s Westport River Daze Festival set for this weekend

Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, 11 a.m. — Westport will be buzzing with activity on Saturdayk, October 1st with the annual River Daze Festival.

The day starts early with 5K run and 1K walk at 7:30 a.m.  The Hwy 524 loop will have many locations for the annual community yard sale that runs from 8-noon.  The parade down Main Street kicks off the festivities at 10:00am with fire departments, tractors, horse riders and more.  Parade Grand Marshall for 2011 is Larry Hedges, local contractor instrumental in the schoolhouse renovation project.

The horse shoe tournament will begin at 11 a.m. followed by Cornhole tournament held at 1 p.m.  Registration for the car show will be from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. with awards presented at 3 p.m.

Guided historical walking tours will provide details about Westport’s heritage including a home used as an underground railroad station for traveling slaves.  Guided tours will start at 11:30am and 1:30pm from Westport Commons.

Throughout the day, there will be children’s activities, booths, food and entertainment.  Oldham County Community Band will take the stage at 11 a.m. followed by Covington Quartet from Covington Ridge Baptist Church at noon.  Barefoot Best Friends perform at 1 p.m.  Next Level Martial Arts studio will have student demonstrations at 1:30 p.m. and groups from Oldham County Arts Center will perform at 2:00pm.
