Obituary: Mae Louise ‘Mazie’ Elder, 87, Fairfield
Mae Louise “Mazie” Elder, 87, of Fairfield, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2025, peacefully at home surrounded by her family. She was born March 14, 1937. She was a Class of 1955 graduate of Mount Washington High School. The following year, she married James Spalding Elder, beginning a beautiful journey together that spanned nearly six decades. Their marriage was a testament to love and devotion as they celebrated 59 wonderful years together before her husband’s passing.

She dedicated her professional life to serving others as a medical assistant. She joined the Bloomfield medical office where she worked for 40 years. Her unwavering commitment to her work and her community was evident throughout her career until her retirement at the age of 70.
She was a devoted member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church She was deeply loved by her community and friends. Her warmth, kindness, and generosity touched all who knew her. She left behind a legacy of love and faith that will be remembered for generations. She loved singing in the St. Michael’s choir, gardening, home decorating, shopping, but especially spending time with family and friends.
Her life was one filled with love, service, and faith. May her memory bring comfort and peace to all whose lives she touched so deeply.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Elder; one daughter, Virginia
Katherine; her parents, Caperton and Gladys Harris; one sister, Fay Vowell; and oner brother, James Hill Harris.
She is survived by five daughters, Dawn (Wally) Bowling, Danette “Cookie” (David) Barnes, Dee Ann (Joe) Crush, Kim (Steve) Hile, and Beth (David) Neltner; two sons, David (Margaret) Elder and Doug (Lisa) Elder; one sister, Betty Harris; one brother, Norval Lee Harris; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
The Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, at St. Michael’s The Archangel Catholic Church with the Rev. Kirby Rust officiating with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 9-11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, at the church.
The family requests expression of sympathy take the form of contributions to St. Michael’s Choir or St. Michael’s Bereavement Committee.
The Houghlin Funeral Home in Bloomfield is in charge of the arrangements.
