Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2025 — At its meeting last week, Nelson Fiscal Court agreed to allow Nelson County residents to dispose of limbs, tress and storm debris during the upcoming countywide Bulky Item Pickup.
The pickup is set to begin with the later this month, starting with the northwestern part of the county, including all areas north of the Bluegrass Parkway and west of Louisville Road.
Residents are asked to separate their items into three individual piles in front of their homes: one pile for discarded tires, a second pile for storm debris, an a third pile for all other bulky items.
A crew of county jail inmates will again help county employees with the bulky item pickup.

BULKY ITEM PICKUP GUIDELINES. Bulky item pickup includes areas in the county outside Bardsdtown and Bloomfield. New Haven is included in the pickup.
Place your bulky items by the roadside no later than 7:30 am on the Monday your area is scheduled for pickup. Only one trip will be made on each road, so be sure everything is out on time.
TIRES. Place them away from other items (Maximum of 8 passenger tires per household).
APPLIANCES & METAL. These should be placed together.
BATTERIES. Please place car and truck batteries next to automobile batteries.
STORM DEBRIS. The Fiscal Court has also agreed to pickup limbs from the recent winter storm during this same bulky item collection. Please place limbs in a separate pile.
ITEMS NO PICKED UP INCLUDE. Loose garbage, paints & liquids will not be picked up.
POSSIBLE ZONING CHANGES. Shawn Moore, the county’s planning commissioner, told the court about changing the number of zoning-related appointees and boards, and a plan to reduce them.
Moore and the planning commission’s idea is to eliminate the boards of adjustment for the cities of New Haven, Fairfield and Bloomfield. Once dissolved, a member from each board would be appointed to the countywide board of adjustments, which would expand from five members to seven. The county would have 4 representatives with one representative each from New Haven, Fairfield and Bloomfiled.
The City of Bardstown has its own board of adjustment that will not change.
Moore said the mayors of the three cities were on board with the proposed change. Nelson Fiscal Court will make the final determination of the make up of the, expanded board of adjustments.
Appointments to the new board will be staggered in term length.
After discussion by the court, the magistrates approved the change.
The court also heard Moore discuss adding medical marijuana business to the permitted uses list for the B-3 zoning classification. The court will take up the matter at a future meeting.
In other business, County Engineer Brad Spalding told the magistrates that the work to finish out office space in the former strip mall adjacent to the senior citizen center is on track for completin by the first of July.
NEXT UP. Nelson Fiscal Court next meets at 6 p.m. Feb. 18, 2025 in the second floor meeting room in the Old Courthouse.
