Obituary: Joseph Louis ‘Jodie’ Smith, 81, New Haven

Joseph Louis “Jodie” Smith, 81, of New Haven, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025, at Highland Health Care in Louisville. He was born July 6, 1943 to the late Francis Bernard and Thelma Thornsberry Smith,

He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He retired from Bird & Son Vinyl. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Ophelia Smith Thornsberry; two sisters, Mildred Smith Ball; and one brother, Pat Smith; and one half–brother, James “Jimmy” Willett.

He is survived by three daughters, Patricia “Patty” Green of Bardstown, Cheryl Catlett SilverHorn (Tim) and Media Smith, both of Louisville; two sons, William Dewayne “Billy” Smith (Pam) of Henryville, Ind. and Todd Downs of Bardstown; two sisters, Sr. Louise Smith SCN of Nazareth and Rita Rapier of Liberty, NC; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The burial is private at St Thomas Catholic Church Cemetery in Bardstown.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 2025, in the Chapel of the William R. Rust Funeral Home in New Haven.

The family request no flowers. Memorial donations may go to the Norton’s Children’s Hospital Stroke Center.

The William R. Rust Funeral Home New Haven Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
