Monday, June 9, 2025 — Bourbon City Bark Park honored the memory of Bardstown Police Officer Jason Ellis and his K-9, Figo, Saturday with the unveiling of a monument dedicated to the memory of both public servants and their service to our community.

Wilma Sorrell and the Bourbon City Bark Park board, members and supporters gathered to honor Ellis and his K-9 with the unveiling of a granite monument at the park that will keep the memory of their service alive for ages to come.

Judge-Executive Tim Hutchins admitted that the dog park idea didn’t seem practical years ago when he first heard about the concept.

Elected officials and dog park supporters turned out in support of the dedication of a monument in honor of Officer Jason Ellis and his K-9, Figo.

“I was wrong, and I apologize,” he told the assembled crowd.

Hutchins said it took him time to understand how much the dog park could benefit the entire community, particularly individuals with pets who don’t have room for their pets to run, play or socialize with other dogs.

He credited the parks’ board members for their work educating elected officials on how the bark park would be a tremendous asset to residents and to tourists.

The monument — more than seven feet tall and made of granite — features a carving of Figo keeping watch, and the names and dates of service of both Figo and Jason Ellis inscribed in the stone.

The monument includes a QR code that will link visitors to a page on the Bardstown Police Department web page that offers details on Officer Ellis and Figo’s service to the community.

The unveiling included burgers and dogs provided by and grilled courtesy of the Bardstown Fire Department. The day features a demonstration of a working K-9 officer and an exhibition of the work they can do to assist law enforcement.
