Joseph Richard ‘Dick’ Newton, 87, Bardstown

Joseph Richard “Dick” Newton, 87, of Bardstown, died Monday, Oct. 31, 2011, at Flaget Memorial Hospital. He was born May 5, 1924, in New Haven. He was a self-employed brick mason and an Army Veteran of WW II whoserved in the D-Day invasion in Normandy at Omaha Beach and in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of American Legion Post 121, V.F.W., St. Joseph Catholic Church, and took part in Eucharistic Adoration at St. Joseph.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Teresa Ann Greenwell Newton; two sons, Joseph Michael Newton, and Larry Keith Newton; his parents, Edward and Mary Newton; three brothers, Orville Newton, Clarence Newton, and James Newton; and three sisters, Bernetta Ballard, Irene Henderson, and Rose Newton.

He is survived by four daughters, Sharon (Greg) Magyar of Cox’s Creek, Donna (Tim Farris) Hagan of Bardstown, Teresa (Jack) Brown of Bloomfield, and Nancie (Otie) Clark of Nathalie, Va.; three sons, Dickie (Mary Lou) Newton of Hodgenville, Michael (Janie) Newton of Bardstown, and Stephen Newton; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 4, 2011, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto Cathedralwith burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Bill Hammer will officiate.

Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Thursday and 9-10:15 a.m. Friday at Barlow Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held Thursday evening.

Memorial contributions may go to Masses.
