Gatewood Galbraith, 64, dies at his Lexington home after short illness

GATEWOOD GALBRAITH

Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2011, 11 a.m. — Perennial political candidate Gatewood Galbraith has died, according to media reports and his running mate’s Facebook page.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reported this morning that Galbraith died last night in his sleep. He told his 2011 gubernatorial running mate Dea Riley on Monday that he had been sick the past week.

Galbraith was a candidate for governor five times, and ran for several other constitutional offices over the years. When he wasn’t running for office, Galbraith was a defense attorney who lived in Lexington.

Galbraith had long been a supporter of the legalization of marijuana, though that issue was not one he campaigned on during his 2011 gubernatorial campaign with Riley.

At the Fancy Farm picnic in August, Galbraith delivered scathing remarks toward Gov. Steve Beshear for avoiding issues and talking patriotism during Beshear’s turn at the picnic podium.

Galbraith is survived by three adult daughters.
