Snowfall making roadways hazardous tonight through Sunday morning

STAFF REPORT

Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, 5 p.m. — Snow continues to fall across all of Nelson County, and has already created hazardous road conditions. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through 6 a.m. Sunday.

The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office was overwhelmed with accident reports about 5 p.m. Saturday, with a backlog of eight non-injury accidents waiting for officers to get to, including a four-car pile-up on US31E, Louisville Road, north of the new section in Cox’s Creek.

The National Weather Service reports in its latest update that up to an inch accumulation can be expected. Untreated roads will become slick and hazardous as the temperatures fall to the low 20s overnight.

The weather service expects another round of snow to move into the region later Monday, possibly beginning as rain changing to snow Monday night and into Tuesday afternoon.

A winter weather advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Drivers should be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibilities, and use extra caution while driving.
