Nelson County braces for up to 6 inches of snow by midday

Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011, 12:30 a.m. — Steady rain that began Tuesday evening is changing over to sleet and freezing rain at this hour as Nelson County braces for 3 to 6 inches of snow by midday Wednesday. For the National Weather Service’s map of anticipated snow totals, click the image at right.

Nelson County is on the northern edge of a group of Central Kentucky counties under a Winter Storm Warning issued Tuesday night by the National Weather Service. The warning is in effect until 4 p.m. Wednesday. Temperatures Wednesday will top out at about 28 degrees, so snow accumulation won’t be melting on its own off the county’s roadways.

A Winter Storm Warning means heavy snow will make travel in the warned areas difficult and hazardous.

Local schools have not decided to call off classes at this hour. County schools issued a revised calendar last week that made up the lost snow days so far.
