Ida Rose Bottom, widow of longtime local jeweler Wathen Bottom, dies at 91

Ida Rose Bottom, 91, of Bardstown, died Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at Flaget Hospital. She was a resident at Windsor bottomclockGardens since January 2001 and a Bardstown resident since 1943. She and her husband, Wathen W. Bottom, owned and operated a watch and jewelry store on North Third Street for many years. A homemaker and mother, she continued managing the jewelry store after his death in 1991 until closing it in 1992.

She was the former Ida Rose Sanford and a native of Bohon, Ky. She was a graduate of Cornishville High School and an avid UofL basketball fan. She was also a member of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ where she had been a faithful member of the choir, Sunday school class, and women’s group. She was a former member of the board.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years; her parents, Charles E. and Reva Wells Sanford; one sister, Mary Helen Scrogham; one brother, Charles E. Sanford, Jr.; one stepbrother, Duane Baxter; and one stepsister, Geraldine Baxter Peyton.

Survivors include one daughter, Phyllis Cole (Charles) of Lenexa, Kan.; two sons, Lawrence (Doraleen) Bottom of Winter Garden, Fla., and Edward Alan (Charlene) Bottom of Louisville; one brother, Harold Wells Sanford (Ann) of Texas; one half-ister, Carol Sanford Pinkston of Willisburg; three half-brothers, Billy Sanford of Bohon, Darrell Sanford of Nicholasville, and Gary Sanford of Mercer County; five grandchildren, Dawn Cole Brown (Glenn) Alpharetta, Ga., Mark Cole (Ingrid) of Flemington, N.J.., Jennifer Bottom Burton, Glendale, Ariz., Brandan Jordan Bottom (Kim) of Apoka, Fla. and Brian (Leslie) Bottom of Louisville; and six great-grandchildren, Emily, Allison, Chris, Cole, Jordan and Griffin.

The funeral is 11 a.m. Monday, July 15, 2013, at the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, 175 E. John Rowan Blvd., with burial in the Bardstown Cemetery. Dr. Rick Loader will officiate.

Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2013, at Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home, 1475 New Shepherdsville Rd., Bardstown. There is no visitation Monday.

Memorial donations may be made to the First Christian Church in memory of Ida Rose Bottom.
