Wednesday, April 3, 2014, 3:30 p.m. — The two fire departments that operate jointly to provide fire protection to Bardstown and surrounding areas are the first Nelson County recipients of money from the Bluegrass Pipeline Community Grant program.
The Bardstown Fire Department and the Bardstown-Nelson County Volunteer Fire Department were each approved for $2,500 in separate grants.
Bardstown Fire Chief Marlin Howard said the city fire department grant will be used to continue work on the fire training facility located at the end of Sutherland Road.
With the help of county government, Howard said the facility will get some grade work and gravel laid in soon.
The grant money will go to enhance the training opportunities at the site, which Howard said will eventually include a burn building for firefighter training and a flammable liquids and gas training area.
“We’ll put that money to good use at the facility,” he said.
The $2,500 grant for the volunteer fire department is earmarked for the new fire substation that will be built on US150 in the Botland area.
“The plans are drawn and the land is acquired,” Howard said. “We’re just taking all the steps to get everything done correctly.”
The new substation will benefit residents by improving fire protection in an area near where the proposed pipeline will be located. The substation will also improve fire ratings for the area, which will help homeowners with the cost of their homeowners’ insurance.
