Monday, April 6, 2015, 9 p.m. — An existing problem with a sewer main on Honeysuckle Lane will mean digging up 250 feet of that line and excavating bedrock in order to make the line flow correctly.

City Engineer Jessica Filiatreau explained the need for the change order at Monday’s special meeting of the Bardstown City Council.
The problem is that the Honeysuckle Lane gravity flower sewer main — originally built in 1973 — was not installed with sufficient slope to keep the main flowing correctly, Filiatreau told the council. The sewer main is laying on bedrock, and it because it lacks enough slope, blockages over the years in the line have been fairly common, requiring periodic work to clear the main.
According to engineering firm Horizon, the work will add about 21 days to the project, and parts of Honeysuckle will need to be closed while the old line is removed and bedrock is excavated. The construction areas in the roadway will be backfilled each day to allow public access during evening hours.
Councilman Bobby Simpson asked if the city’s employees could do the work rather than hire a contractor. Filiatreau said the city lacks the equipment to excavate the rock and would require renting the necessary equipment. City utility crews are already busy on existing projects as well, she said.
The council approved the change order in a 5-1 vote to approve the $36,300 change order for the Wickland Boone sewer main extension project. Councilman Bobby Simpson cast the “no” vote.
Rame Contracting LLC of Springfield will do the work, and expects to have it substantially completed by June 15, 2015.
