First responders use drones, ATVs to locate, rescue hunter missing near Boston

NC GAZETTE / WBRT RADIO
STAFF REPORT

Friday, Oct. 3, 2025 — A hunter missing in the Boston area was located and rescued Wednesday night after a multi-agency search effort involving drones, UTVs, and emergency responders.

At 8:20 p.m., Nelson County Dispatch received a report of a missing hunter near Shady Lane in Boston. Deputies with the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office and officers with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife were the first to respond, beginning a ground search.

Due to the size and difficulty of the terrain, drone teams from Nelson County Emergency Management and the Nelson County Fire Department were called to assist, along with a UTV from the Rolling Fork Fire Department to aid ground transport.

After about 90 minutes of searching, drone pilots spotted the injured hunter nearly three-quarters of a mile off-road and directed rescuers to his location. Roughly 30 minutes later, the team successfully transported the man to the extraction point.

Nelson County EMS then transferred the hunter to the Boston School, where he was flown to UofL Hospital in Louisville for evaluation and treatment.

No further details about the hunter’s identity or condition have been released.
