Tuesday, June 6, 2017, 1:45 p.m. — The man involved in Monday’s multi-county police chase that began in Louisville and ended on Springfield Road has been identified as Charles Edgar Mullins, 45, of Bardstown.
According to a KSP press release, Mullins was in Louisville driving a Chrysler 300 with expired tags early Monday morning when Louisville Metro Police officers attempted to stop his vehicle. The vehicle fled the traffic stop and Mullins allegedly fired shots at officers from his vehicle at multiple locations in Jefferson County as the pursuit headed south.
KSP troopers from Post 4 and Post 12 joined the pursuit on I-65 near Shepherdsville. The pursuit continued down I-65 and into the Bardstown area. According to the press release, a Nelson County deputy sheriff deployed tire deflation devices in the area of 150 Quick Stop on Springfield Road. The vehicle eventually came to a complete stop near the city limits on Springfield road, where Mullins exited the vehicle and fired multiple rounds at officers and pointed a rifle at them. Officers returned fire.
Mullins ran into the woods and was later located in a creek bottom by Bardstown Police K-9 Officer Sgt. Jeremy Cauley. Several shots were exchanged between Mullins, troopers, Nelson County deputies and Cauley. Mullins was died at the scene from multiple gun shots.
The case remains under investigation by the KSP Critical Incident Response Team. An autopsy is being performed today at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville.
