NCHS student charged after bringing .22 rifle to school in his car

Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, 3:59 p.m. — A Nelson County High School student was charged with possession of a deadly weapon Monday morning after a fellow student alerted school officials the student my have brought a firearm to school.

In a automated phone call to high school parents and guardians, school principal Eric Gilpin briefly explained the incident and told parents a letter further explaining the situation was sent home with students.

According to a school release, the student who tipped off school officials had been threatened verbally by the student and told officials he may have brought a gun to school Monday. With the student’s consent, school officials, along with the school resource officer, searched his vehicle and located a .22 caliber rifle and ammunition.

The student is a minor, and he was turned over to the custody of his parents. The investigation is continuing.
