Obituary: Anna Lavon Cecil, 89, Howardstown

Anna Lavon Cecil, 89, of Howardstown, died Sunday, May 24, 2026, at Signature HealthCare at Colonial. She was born May 7, 1937, in Bardstown to the late Robert Russell and Mary Helen “Lanie” Hutchins Greenwell.

ANNA LAVON CECIL

Her life revolved around her faith and family. She was an active member of St. Ann Church in Howardstown, including many years as part of the choir and took pride in baking many cakes for the Howardstown Homecoming. She also served as a volunteer reading tutor for elementary children.

Also known as “Sissy” to her siblings, nieces and nephews, she loved anything sweet. She loved spending time with her family and never turned down an invitation. She would say “Don’t ask me if you don’t want me to go!”

The family would like to express sincere appreciation to Windsor Gardens, Cooper Trail Senior Living and Signature HealthCare at Colonial for their wonderful care.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Donald Cecil, who passed away on the same day, 13 years earlier; five sisters, Lorene Bartley, Helen Downs, Valinda Pettit, Sister Dolores Greenwell SCN, and an infant sister, Esther Greenwell; and four brothers, Collins Greenwell, Marvin Greenwell, Donnie Greenwell and Happy Greenwell.

She is survived by one daughter, Donna (Jeff) Grayson of Erlanger; five sons, Alan (Diane) Cecil of Bardstown, Joe Paul (Pam) Cecil of Hodgenville, and Terry (Penny) Cecil, Matt (Terri) Cecil, and David (Mary) Cecil, all of Howardstown; one sister, Ann Hall of New Haven; 19 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren with one on the way; two great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Friday, May 29, 2026, at St. Ann Catholic Church with the Rev. Peter Bucalo officiating. Burial is in the church cemtery.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, May 28, 2026, and 8-9 a.m. Friday, May 29, 2026, at the Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home with a 6 p.m. Thursday prayer service with the Rosary.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. Ann Catholic Church.

The Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
