Betty Jean Ackermann, 92, of Louisville, passed away Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Born Aug. 7, 1934, in Marion County, she was the second eldest of 13 children born to Hubie and Josephine Flieg Mattingly. Betty and her former husband were the founders of Derby City Sign & Electric.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph H. “Junie” Mattingly, Jr., Robert K. “Bobby” Mattingly and David Louis “Spock” Mattingly.
Survivors include four children, Doug Ackermann, MD (Sherry) of Louisville, Mark Ackermann, MD (Stephaney) of Lebanon, Carolyn Ansert (Mike) of Louisville, and Ken Ackermann of Louisville; her companion of 18 years, Harold Cecil; eight grandchildren, Michael, Mandy, Andrea, Laura, Elizabeth, Joey, Ethan, and Blake; eight great grandchildren, Oskar, Annika, Brigg, Lauren, Caroline, Myles, Mason, and Brayden; eight siblings, Carol Mattingly, and Brenda Mattingly, all of Louisville, Mary Thornberry of Brookside, New Jersey, Patsy Clements and Rosie Bickett (Michael) all of Bardstown, Nancy Mattingly of Nazareth, Billy Mattingly (Libby) and Lynn Hall (David) all of Loretto.
In keeping with her wishes, her body was donated to the University of Louisville Medical School. A celebration of the life of Betty Jean Ackermann will be held 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, 2026 at Mattingly Funeral Home, 195 Holy Cross Road, Loretto.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may go to Hosparus Health Louisville.
