
Dr. John J. Sonne, 98, of Bardstown, died Friday, May 13, 2016, at Windsor Gardens. He was born July 21, 1917, in Laconia, Ind. He served as Nelson County’s only surgeon and specialist. According to his good friend and colleague, Dr. Harry Spalding, he was on call seven days a week, 24 hours a day. He always came out regardless of the hour or the patient’s ability to pay. He was a very dedicated and devoted physician. He will always be remembered by his patients, as he would whistle in the hallway, on his way to consult them.
He served on numerous committees, was president of the Flaget Memorial Hospital staff, and was dedicated to the concept of the Civil War Museum. He was inducted into the Bardstown-Nelson County Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame in 1998. He served on the Bardstown Independent School Board from 1957 to 1974.
He was an United States Army Veteran of World War II where he was a combat surgeon with the Red Horse 113th Calvary Group.
He was preceded in death by former wife Angela Rawles Sonne; one brother, Dr. Louis S. Sonne; and one grandson, Damon Rawles Sonne.
He is survived by three sons, Dr. John (Libby) Sonne, Ron (Pam) Sonne, and Mike (Brenda) Sonne, all of Bardstown; one brother, Dr. Irvin H. Sonne of New Albany, Ind.;
six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his companion, Betty Seay of Bardstown.
By his request, cremation was chosen with no services.
