Obituary: George Michael Smith, 44, Gravel Switch

George Michael “Mike” Smith, 44, of Gravel Switch, passed away Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026, as the result of an automobile accident. He was born Sept. 19, 1981, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to the late George Robert and Leona Mae Smith. Mike cherished every day spent with his wife, and the two deeply enjoyed one another’s company. He was a devoted father and a kind, helpful person who was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. He also enjoyed playing cards with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by two children, Alena Mike-yla Jo Shipp and Brageden Michael Robert Smith who also died in an auto accident on March 25, 2018.

Survivors include his wife, Crystal Lynn Shipp (Smith); three children, Amira Shipp, Ameia Smith, and Arysia Smith, all at home; three siblings, Mary Smith, Robert Smith, and George A. Smith, all of Lebanon; several nieces and nephews including a special niece, Big Head “Laelani” Vancleave.

Funeral Services for George Michael “Mike” Smith will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026, at Mattingly Funeral Home, 195 Holy Cross Road, Loretto. Elder Michael Johnson will officiate. Interment will follow in Ryder Cemetery.

The visitation is 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mattingly Funeral Home.
