Obituary: Kenneth John Mattingly, 61, New Hope

Kenneth John (Free the Weed) Mattingly, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 2026 at his residence in New Hope with his wife by his side.

He was born July 12, 1965 in Bardstown to the late Joseph William and Carol Ann Mattingly.

Kenny was hard working man and spent many hours doing so. He was a top hand in tobacco harvesting for many years, and was remarkably agile in the barn. He enjoyed fishing, Frog gigging, being outdoors and his Old Chevy Trucks. But more than anything he loved his grandchildren dearly and enjoyed spending time with them whenever possible. All that knew Kenny, knew he had a big and very loving heart and he showed it in many ways. He was loved by many friends and never met a stranger.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son Jacob Kenneth Lee Mattingly, and several close friends in which he still grieved for.

He is survived by the love of his life and loving wife Shirley Thompson Mattingly. Three children, Kasey (John) Cox, Ashley (Tyler) Timmons and Kimberly (Mike) May, Seven siblings Trish and the late Claykie Gribbins of New Hope, Mary (Dan) Simpson of Chaplin, Billy (Kay) Mattingly of New Haven, Frank Mattingly, Bernie (late Joe Greenwell), Michelle (Jimmy) Knopp and Lillian (Uddie) Mattingly of New Haven. Ten grandchildren, Five great-grandchildren, several nieces nephews cousins and friends.

The funeral was Thursday Aug. 27, 2026 in the Chapel of the William R. Rust Funeral Home

The William R. Rust Funeral Home New Haven Chapel is in charge of services.
