Obituary: Mark Sheckles, 66, Bardstown

Mark Sheckles, 66, of Bardstown, died Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026, at Norton Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Louisville. He accepted Christ at an early age and stood strong in his faith in the Lord.

He loved his church. He was a trustee at First Baptist Church and also served many years driving the church van.

He loved fishing and coaching. He was a faithful baseball coach of the Bardstown Rec League, basketball coach for St. Joe, and baseball Babe Ruth coach. He was an avid U of L basketball fan. He was also one of the original founders of Buttermilk Days and looked forward to the celebration every year.

He was a former employee of Bird and Son, Burroughs, North American Pipe, and LINPAC.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Elizabeth Sheckles McMakin.

He is survived by his loving and caring wife, Lisa; one son, Brandon of Springfield; one sister, Elizabeth “Cee Cee” Sheckles of Bardstown; three brothers, Bill (Linda) Sheckles and Joseph “Joey” (Shonna) Sheckles, both of Bardstown and James “Eric” (Debbie) McMakin of Louisville; one uncle, John “Red” Reed; one aunt, Violet Nelly of Bardstown; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

The funeral is 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, at Bardstown First Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael N. Smith officiating. Burial is in Bardstown Cemetery.

Visitation is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026 at the church.

The Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
