Obituary: Virginia Sympson, 101, Bardstown

Virginia Sympson, 101, of Bardstown, passed away Monday, Aug. 10, 2026 at her residence. She was born on March 3, 1925 in Bardstown. Virginia was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Michaels Catholic Church and believed in her catholic faith. A member of the Nelson County Homemakers. Virginia enjoyed farm life, gardening, her flowers, traveling and enjoyed a good game of rook. She was a very outgoing person that loved her family, grandchildren, friends and neighbors.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Seibert Sympson; son, William Sympson; parents, Gilbert and Ella Walls; and three grandchildren, Nicole Sympson, Jennifer Sympson and Meghan Sympson; two son in laws, John Bradley and Greg Mayer; daughter-in-law; Linda Sympson; and sole survivor of eleven brothers and sisters.

She is survived by fourteen children, Jimmy Sympson (Louise Young), Louise Mayer, Charlene Coultas (Ralph), Donnie Sympson (Terri), Beverly Sympson, Nancy Bradley, Paul Sympson, Julia Phillips (Bob), Mike Sympson, Marie Watson, Ann McMichael (Jeff), Carolyn Sympson, Debbie Terrell (Brent), and Jerry Sympson (Allison); forty-three grandchildren; ninety-four great-grandchildren; forty-six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Her funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, 2026 at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto Cathedral with burial in Bardstown Cemetery. The Very Reverend J. Randall Hubbard will be officiating.

Visitation will be 3 – 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026 and 9 – 10:15 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, 2026 at Barlow Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held Thursday evening.

Memorial contributions may go to St. Joseph Catholic Church.
