
Lena S. McGee, 97, of Bardstown, died peacefully Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at Bardstown Nursing and Rehabilitation. She was born April 11, 1921, in Bardstown to the late James Walter and Alma Marie Smith. She was a former employee of the former Waterfill and Frazier Distillery, retired from Beam’s Distillery, and she and her husband owned and operated McGee Dairy. She was the oldest member of St. Gregory’s Church where she was a former member of the Altar Society and the Bereavement committee. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Charles Leon McGee; three sisters, Mary Ellen Whitaker, Alma Marie Dugan, and Sara Teresa Kelly; four brothers, Marvin Smith, Basil Smith, Walter Jr.”Smitty” Smith and an infant brother Francis Smith; her son-in-law, Ronnie Thompson; one granddaughter-in-law, Sharon McGee; one great-granddaughter, Sydney Wood.
She is survived by one daughter, Susan (Richard Kelty) Thompson of Bardstown; two sons, Jimmy (Patsy) McGee and Jerry (June) McGee, both of Bardstown; eight grandchildren, Terry (Nickie Hall) Thompson, Christy (Wayne) Christopher, Bobbi McGee, Chuck (Barbara) McGee, Sheila (Todd) Collins, Michelle Moore Ragan, Stephanie (Thad Snellen) Wood, Shawn (Todd) Bartley; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
The family has followed her wishes of cremation. The memorial service is 3 p.m. Sunday, May 6, 2018, at the Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home.
Visitation is 1-3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to St. Gregory’s Building Fund or Bereavement Fund.
