Tuesday’s lightning strikes prompt city, county fire department runs

Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2015, 9:30 a.m. — The thunderstorms that brought torrential rain, hail and lightning through Nelson County Tuesday evening temporarily overwhelmed the city’s storm drains and flooded several city streets and the lightning strikes prompted several fire department runs.

fireshieldAt 7:10 p.m., the Nelson County Fire Department responded for a power transformer and struck by lightning and a possible utility pole on fire in the 3600 block of Boston Road. Firefighter arrived to find the fire out and no need for additional action.

The Bardstown Fire Department was dispatched at 7:21 p.m. to a home struck by lightning in the 100 block of Sunset Drive. The resident reported the home struck by lightning and a smell of something burning. Firefighters discovered the home’s alarm system had been damaged by lightning, and found no fire during their inspection of the home and attic.

The Nelson County Fire Department was dispatched moments later at 7:24 p.m. after a homeowner in the 6200 block of Louisville Road reported the home struck by lightning and the stove sparking and smoking. Power was cut to the stove and the occupants evacuated the home while firefighters were en route. Firefighters checked the home and found no fire.
